The last week of summer holidays was a busy one for everyone but me. Mom and Dad were at the school all week, Cameron was still working at the museum, and Jordan had gone camping for the week with Luke’s family. I spent the first two nights of that week at Gram’s like Mom had suggested. It was raining hard when Mom dropped me off.

“So, you think you want to stay two nights with an old lady again?”

Gram’s kitchen was at its usual sauna-like temperature. She lifted the lid of the stove top and dropped in another stick of wood.

“It’s cold and damp out there,” Gram said. “We need the rain, though. The soil in the garden is hard-packed and parched. This rain will give it a good soaking.”

“I brought my blocks and the material, Gram. Do you think you could help me cut the pieces and sew the top together?”

“Yes. I got the Singer out of the hall closet and you can bring it downstairs. I’ll show you how to thread it. Have you sewn with a machine before?”

“Yes. We had a sewing unit in Tech last year. We made tote bags.”

“I will be leaving after lunch. Gladys Titus is picking me up for Keenagers. Isn’t that the stupidest made-up word you have ever heard? They think that getting all the old folks together once a month and giving us a perky name will make getting old and decrepit seem like fun. I don’t usually go but I gave in to Gladys this time. Maybe I’ll win one of the stupid games they make us play.

“Let’s cut your material first, Betony. I’ll clear off the table and you can turn the overhead light on. Jimmy would always say, ‘You can’t buy shares in NB Power, Ida,’ if I turned a light on in the daytime.”

I laid out the blue flowered material and began cutting the large squares. Gram said that I should cut them and sew them to the nine patches and then she would cut the strips for the border of the quilt.

“I’ll ask Fran Gamble if the United Church ladies would quilt this for you. I’ll probably see her today. She is one of the keenest of the Keenagers. I’d like to put it on the frames and quilt it for you myself, but my quilting days are done. Fran’s group does a nice job. Your mother will have to pay them. They don’t charge too much, not enough in my mind for all the work involved. Nobody these days appreciates hand quilting. Most people get their tops quilted by machine. Terrible.

“I’ve made baked beans and brown bread for our supper and I have a ham steak to fry,” she continued as she put another stick in the fire. “The beans are in the oven so you’ll have to keep the fire going while I’m gone. No point in using the electric oven when the fire is going anyway.”

“You can’t buy shares in NB Power, right, Gram?”
